Friday, 6:30... will write it down, put my TV card back in, etc... might see if I can get another massive aerial extension cable, too, save wiring everything up... the VCR downstairs is vastly better than mine... =)

i've done the video-tv-headphone socket-comp before, worked great early on but the last few times i've tried it it's given weird buzzing noises throughout, maybe just the video recorder getting old.

sending stuff to you sounds good (thanks for the help yet again) but other than the totp thing this friday bbc2 at 6.30pm bloody briliant show you should watch it yourself that i'll try to record, there's no way i'll trust the post office with my crox tapes, don't see anyway they could get replaced and they're fucking great. actually can you try recording totp yourself cos i've got really bad reception up here.

one day i'll figure out how to bootleg properly.

They're quite cheap if you buy second-hand. Results usually depend on how good the VCR is, more than the card.

If you're fussed about videos (and sound quality, etc) you can always send 'em to me and I'll mail 'em back when done. It's easy to make a large file smaller, but it isn't possible to do much to improve initial quality. Postage-wise it would make sense to do more than one tape at a time and I could include the results on CDR rather than emailing large files.

If you're gonna do it with a webcam, aim for a small picture size which can support at least 15 frames a second, and if the TV has a headphone socket, get the audio from that direct to your sound card.

As far as file-sizes go, codecs matter the most. DivX for video and MP3 for audio (with appropriate settings) produce best results in my experience.

I don't know how you did the other vids... using a TV card + VCR to capture them, right?

I wouldn't go with QuickTime... basically, if you capture it from VHS or TV uncompressed (or using Indeo set to maximum quality) I can run you through using VirtualDub + the free DivX video codec + an MP3 codec...

http://virtualdub.org/
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=divx
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/audio_encoders/lame_acm.cfm

I recommend 5.0 of DivX over the newer 5.0.1, as the latest version has some issues with VirtualDub.

If I make a recording of a certain top of the pops show on friday 6.30 bbc2 a bloody briliant show that everyone should give up their mum's shit dinner to watch.. in exactly the same way as i did all the others (crap like) could you make it smaller and less weird codec dependent. still dunno how someone can make a quicktime vid exatly the same lenght as all mine yet get it down to 1 1/2 megs. grrrr.

Indeo 5 is usually installed with most webcams and TV cards.

BTW, if you want a hand with video encoding, drop me a line...
