Sheffield Leadmill Recording Download

The LeadmillSorry for the break over the last few days, audio editing is one horrendously slow process. On the upside, you end up with this: The Crimea, Live @ Sheffield Leadmill. A full gig download curtosey your favourite Crimea fansite, from the show before the best show of the tour (or so say the band, but Sheffield was pretty damn hard to beat).

Get it all on the downloads page; right click the links and choose “save target as…” if you have any problems. They’re listed in the correct order, though the playlist file will help you out in that regard.

A second, re-mixed version from Inaudible’s tech man Denyer may be available tomorrow, though personally I find the bass a little too quite and noise a little too much in it to recommend over the current available version. But if you wanna have a quick listen to both, here’s a sample of my mix and Denyer’s mix. Comment on your preference below.

    ^ If anyone wants it. Not for headphone listeners, but if you’ve got an amp/speakers setup it should sound pretty much as if you’re in the hall. Chris did a great job on the recording, no sound drop out during the set.

    Three Winamp plugins, one used to chain the other two together: MuchFX2, Wide & Dynamix, Compressor & Wider. Adjust settings to taste, the ones I used are shown in the pic.

    that one’s the remixed version of my remix ain’t it? i did the same stuff to the whole of the original untouched-by-my-amateur-hands recording which is what’s in your original preview. dunno what the difference is really but hey, kept me busy for a few hours :)

    When you amplified the original it hadn’t produced any noticeable clipping and through speakers there wasn’t audible difference between testshefamp.mp3 and testshefampnoise.mp3 — at normal playback volume, without any further amping — so what’s there is your slight noise reduction in Audacity plus a lot of stereo widening/enlivening and volume shaping by the plugins.

    There’s a slight burbling sound in the background on really quiet crowd bits that have been amped up afterwards — that would disappear if you used the original source recording but probably be replaced with a pronounced hiss. It’s a trade-off; noise reduction can’t completely remove noise without damaging frequencies when it gets past the quiet bits to the music. I’m happy with hiss OR burbling as long the crowd/banter can be heard between songs, though if I was using the original I’d have stuck with hiss. (If you don’t mind putting up the original recording, I’ll make fresh MP3s out of that…)

    Which version people prefer is likely to be a case of whether they’re listening through headphones / small computer-type speakers or through a hi-fi system with accurate (not ‘phat’, just accurate) mid-range and bass sound.

    Purists would insist on having the original recording and applying their own changes to it whilst playing, rather than making changes and saving an edited version… but screw ‘em, they’ll never recreate exactly what the sound was like live.

    You might be able to reduce the noise directly when recording the sound from your player onto the computer. The ideal playback volume is as close to not clipping as possible, so that any noise from the sound card is as low in the mix as possible to start with.
