So you’ve been saving up all year, got a tenner in your pocket and nothing to spend it on, all the local stores have sold out and you NEED THAT RUDDY ALBUM! As you should know by now, Tragedy Rocks was released in the UK today, so geddown your local shop and buy em out, eh? Not surprising then that half the world’s press establishment have chosen the past few days to release a mirriad of news and reviews on the band. Here’s the latest; if you’ve got any more news then mail it in or use the message board.
For starters, The Independent had something on the band in their paper on Saturday (15th) though I only found out today. So if you’ve still got a copy lying around, I’d love to have a scan. They’re also in this months Fly magazine too. Again, scans welcome.
And onto the album reviews. Manchester Entertainment Online love it, and think the album cover is quite familiar. I’m gutted I didn’t notice the similarities first. Anyway, hit more to have a read and see what I’m spraffin on about.
Fanzine website God Is In The TV have a nice review of of the album giving it 4 out of 5, and also a review of the band’s Peel Day show at The Enterprise in Camden.
Thanks to Dave on the message board for pointing out this one - Channel 4 teletext site Planet Sound have an album review up to, and give it 6/10 despite not being blown off their feet by the thing. Hit more to read it.
Warner Brother’s latest Rock News mailout again features some Crimea news, this time advertising their album release and UK tour. Hit more to read it and sign up on the top right of their website.
Music promotion company First For Music have a competition up on their site to win one of two singed copies of the album to give away. It looks like you just have to register to enter, though I tried and nothing happened. Figures.
Enough reviews for today. Only thing left to mention is that the support bands for The Crimea’s UK tour have been announce via their official site. The Heights and People In Planes will be sharing the duties; check out the updated gigs page on this site for more gig info.

Sorry this new’s getting to you so late. It dropped through my virtual letterbox but ninety minutes ago. Guess who’s taking over your radio waves tonight?
Kerrang Radio - The band have just recorded an interview with Steve Harris… I was gonna say it’s on tonight but more virtual droplets of info are dropping from the sky as I type. It’ll be broadcast on Kerrang 105.2 FM in the West Midlands area on Saturday morning (22/10) on the Ctrl ALT Del show between 2.00am and 4.00am (that’s Friday night if you stay up late). In the rest of the country, it’ll be on Kerrang Radio on the Ctrl ALT Del show on Sunday evening (23/10) between 9.00pm and 11.00pm. You can listen to both stations online at www.whatson.com/kerrang or check out the Kerrang Radio website for more info.
BRMB - They’re also recording and interview with Russ Morris for Birmingham’s BRMB 96.4 FM. It’ll either be on sometime between 7.00pm and 10.00pm any evening this week or between 12.00pm and 2.00pm in the afternoon on Saturday. More news as I get it, you can check out their site at www.brmb.co.uk but there’s no online stream so if anyone manages to record the thing, you know where to send it ;o).
BBC Radio Notingham - To round it up, The Crimea are also recording an acoustic session as well as an interview with Dean Jackson for BBC Radio Nottingham. It’ll be broadcast on The Beat show, most likely this Saturday evening (22/10) between 6.00pm and 10.00pm and you can listen on 95.5 FM or online via their website.
Time for some of that most exciting of web media: photos! And loads of em too…
First up are a couple new galleries I’ve added to the images page. The Bowery Ballroom and Hangar Bar shots were all taken by Tear-n Tan, so don’t nick em. You can view more of their shots including some from numerous Crimea shows on their website at teatanonline.com. You’ll also notice that the versions on this site are using a new image display script. They should pop up in the same page, you can move em around by dragging the top bit and close them by hitting the big X. Let me know if you have any problems with them; most can be solved by just refreshing the page.
Thanks to Martin in America who sent in scans of a flyer and some of the US promo albumy thing. Check them out on the other images page and the promos section. He’s also stuck up a load more shots from The Crimea’s US tour on his ImageEvent page.
Away from Inaudible, MySpace bloger Dani G has some shots from their Mercury Lounge show on her profile.
As always, the band’s official Buzznet photo album is constantly being updated. And after the direction the band’s been heading in lately: Elle Magazine, SheKnows.com, The Sun… Like I said, Playboy’s just around the corner. That on the right is for making me resize all them pics, Ganders.
ALBUM COMP WINNERS
After much deliberation and hard thought, a winner for the album competition has finally been chosen. It was ruddy close, not helped by the fact there were hardly any entries. Both entries (yes, all two of them) were based on Lottery Winners On Acid and were both good efforts in their own ways. During judging, combined opinion went out the window, and I’d declare a tie break if it weren’t for only having one album to give away. So, by shear number of votes, and as I personally feel it’s a more original effort (and it made me laugh more), the winner is…
Americans On Springer by Andy Parker
Sorry Denyer, I know you prefered ‘Anthony Blair On Acid’ due to it scanning better, if only I hadn’t left my other album copies at home :o(
There was also a third entry, though unfortunately it came after the closing date and my conciense would not let me allow it entry to the competition. That said, the song, titled Opposite Shapes (a lovely story about the life and death of a Babybel cheese), was considered by all judges to be most excellent, with one judge judging that it’s line “Yeah I was a fool, well I am a fool laughing cow brandished on my outer foil” was better than the original song. It was also the favourite of the competition’s special guest judge, whom I can now reveal to be Mr Andrew Norton of Crimea guitar fame, who felt it flew better rythmically, and that having “so much dark, addictive passion about Babybel was amusing”.
Anyway, I’ll get the album off to the winner asap and hopefully I’ll be able to get something to the runner(s) up too. And if there’s no objections, I should also be bringing you the full lyrics to all the entries very soon.
The Warner Brothers PR crew must be in full swing, mailing out promos to any and everyone they know. The Music Edge got hold of the US version and have given it a good review and a rating of ‘B’ over on their site. In the UK, the nation’s favourite comedians music reviewers Drowned In Sound gave it 4/5 saying “the album is a battle between opposing forces ? bleakness and humour, beauty and ugliness, pure pop and musical interest”. Tabloid UK paper The Sun also found themselves with a copy and gave it another 4/5 in yesterdays edition saying it was a “cracking debut”. Hit more for copies of all the reviews.
Away from reviews, rumour has it the band are having some little raffles during their UK shows. If you happen to give your name and email to sign up to the band’s mailing list during the show, you could be in with a chance to win some CDs or T-Shirts. Speaking of which, I should be having my own competition on here sometime later today, so don’t go anywhere.
UPDATE: Almost forgot the monthly plug for Davey’s MySpace blog. Tales of intrigue and mystery abound. Here’s an excert and your weekly music fix: “I remember when I first moved to London, ‘The Big Joke’, listening to ‘Going Over To Susan?s House‘ again and again, saying hello to everyone I met on the street like you did in Ireland and Wales and not realizing that this was London and no-one says hello on the street…“.

The online cultural fanzine God Is In The TV is about to a question and answer session with The Crimea and they want your questions to put to the band. If there’s anything you’d like to know (why Joe dyed his hair blonde then shaved it all off, why Andy always wears thoes stupid hats) then pop along to their forums and leave your question in this thread. Be quick though, they’ve all gotta be in by this afternoon :oS (told you I was slow lately).
So much to get through, I don’t know where to start. Probably with the 20+ Crimea related emails I was sent over the weekend. Mostly by one person. Revenge shall be mine…
But first, two of you emailed me about this: a section on The Crimea in Warner Brother’s Rock News mailshot, mainly a list of tour dates. Hit more to see the article.
Another nameless Inaudible fan pointed me towards the Boston Globe for a preview of the band’s TT The Bear’s show. Someone should tell the Globe’s webmaster that if they want people to pay subscriptions to read articles, don’t give em the whole text in the search results. Ah well, hit more if you still can’t be bothered.
Yet another article on the Out Of Africa download comes from Crud Magazine who inject their version with a bit of history.
Here’s something Davey mentioned in his latest blog entry; The Sunday Time’s article on The Crimea. If you can’t be bothered signing up for free then by all means, hit more.
The gig dates have changed again. Out go Sheffield and Birmingham and in comes Newcastle. Check out all the change right here. There’s some special Christmas show at some point too.
Also in need of mention is Dermot O’Leary who, on September 24th, played White Russian Galaxy during his BBC Radio 2 show (see Google’s cache and also, I’ve figured out why I’m sent straight to the US version of the official site half the time. Seems http://www.thecrimea.net takes you stright there, while http://thecrimea.net sends you to the region selection (with http://www.thecrimea.net/uk being the UK version). Or you could just stick around here, but I’m getting mighty busy so it might be a while before I post important news.
To celebrate the life of Crimea fan and broadcasting legend John Peel, The Crimea will be playing a very special show at The Enterprise pub in Camden, London on October 13th; John Peel Day. To purchase tickets to the event, please call The Enterprise on 020 7485 2659. Expect a barnstorming gig and special guests aplenty; burning envers and not a hint of monophonic sound. For more details on this and many other Crimea gigs, check out the gigs page.
Anyone wanna take over a fair to middling Crimea fansite? I don’t know how much longer I can keep it up. Damn Uni. I know why Davey called it an internment camp now…
Sooo… Thought the WOXY session was the only radio promotion the band were doing over in the States? Think again. They also popped over to British Accents Radio to talk and play another session on monday afternoon. Of course, no one thought about telling anyone, but never mind eh… Oh wait, they played Sleeper just before The Crimea. Noooooooooo… Show recordings anyone?
Here’s Filter Mag’s news on the show and the tracklisting via Spinitron.
Also giving the band some radio luvin’ on Monday was Zane Lowe, who played White Russian Galaxy during his radio one show. Whether he procedes to play the remainder of the album during a single future show remains to be seen, though lord knows Peel would. Single in January? Unlikely, but hopefully the US album should be out around then.
This month’s scandalous appearance of The Crimea in tantalisingly feminine surrondings come curtosey of SheKnows.com. The self styled “web for women” features a bio on the band which looks to be a larger version of the one on their MySpace profile. Next up, PlayBoy. Or some shots of them surrounded by naked women… Nah, it’ll never happen.
This Out Of Africa download seems to be getting music news sites in a twist. FMagazine have a large bio and gig dates along with a link to the download, GigWise a much shorter post with link, This Is Fake DIY virtually nothing but the link and Thunder Chucky have the news hidden away down the bottom of their news coloumn.

Tragedy Rocks. God knows what’s happening to the release date, and frankly I’m sure even he’s having trouble figuring it out. Basically, if you’re from the US or live online, you can saftely count it as released, albeit avilable from independent or online stores only in a simple cardboard sleeve. The cut down UK version should still be out October 17th, full US release next year.
Which is just enough time to foget what PE.com have to say about it. Not much, though about what you’d expect from a teen page about garfiled, zits, and articles such as “cat tries to escape governor in photo”. I’m thinking Britney would be more to the author’s taste. Luckily it’s subscribers only. Unluckily subscription is free.
Back to some proper journalism, APP.com have a small interview with Davey up as part of their preview to the 23rd’s Stone Pony gig.
Now it gets interesting. To promote the release of the UK album on October 17th, ContactMusic.com have a small review and links to two song downloads, the second of which being the non-album track Out Of Africa which may be of interest even to those of you with a copy.
Thanks to the genius that is Denyer, I bring to you a download link for the band’s first ever full music video Baby Boom. I’d love to bring you some screen shots too, but for some reason Power DVD won’t let me take any. Or skip position during it. You can blame Microsoft for that.
Instead, here’s a shot of Joe during the Revolution Hall gig, taken by Martin Hough. You can check out more of his photos from the gig and a few others on his ImageEvent page.

Kindly pointed out by Peter in a previous thread, The Crimea are currently SPIN.com’s Band Of The Day, so there’s a nice big pic of them on their main page and… oh my, that’s not another audio stream… Err… check it out, then, for a bio, gig dates, links, and The Crimea’s FIRST MUSIC VIDEO *g*. Can ye guess what the next single is yet? Ick. Someone have a stream ripper installed? I would, but as the Uni’s network even blocks Firefox half the time, I won’t bother. Anyone know how to proxy tunnel? Oh yeah, hit more, etc.

It’s Our Party And We’ll Get Mashed if We Want To
Details on the band’s private album launch party, also available on the official site.

Rightyho; The Crimea just finished their live session on WOXY.com. During a chilled out acoustic set they played Lottery Winners On Acid, Baby Boom, Howling At The Moon and Someone’s Crying. There was also an eight minute interview with the band where they spoke about their current tour, EP covers and the new album. Guess what? Release story part 23.8: The US album is available right now in American independent record stores. Officially though, it’s still out early 2006. Shoot me. Anyways, some of the session shall be up here in the coming days in MP3 form. And, the stream only cut out once, so I recon I can cut and paste the song back together with seemingly little difference. Yay for cut and paste. Gotta love how they followed up the session with a song from Ash. Touch of genious, really. And, Davey, woxthefux?!?
UPDATE: MP3s NOW AVAILABLE. Albeit just the talking stuff. You can safely leave the intro alone, but the interview’s a must and the outro for added effect.
Details of a private Crimea album launch party on October 1st, and how to get into it, are on www.thecrimea.net right now.
Live session on WOXY.com tonight, don’t miss it (details below). UPDATE: They’ll be on at 9pm GMT (UK time). WOXY must be running off EST, else they don’t know what EDT is :o|.
And yet another twist in the Tragedy Rocks release story. Amazon.com are seemingly shipping out pre-release copies or something of the US version, even though the album’s supposedly not released until next year. Apparently these ones are coming in cardboard sleeves and not full jewel cases. Lawd knows what’s going on, but deffinately another reason to avoid Amazon (they’re too spensive for starters). If you do get one and aren’t too happy about it, you most likely won’t have any problem returning it for a refund (goods not as described, album unreleased, amazon shipping out promos (which you may wish to point out is illegal) etc). UPDATE: There’s one up on eBay too.
