Another Kickass Setlist

What can I say. If you can’t join em, wallow in the mysery of photographic evidence.

Gig Setlist, 2002

As I commented on the original Facebook link, “classic after classic after classics after…”.

Fear of Literacy

First, there was the Mailing List. It ended. It ended again. It was quickly resurrected. And continued running, even to this day – to get on it, I forget, email Owen or something…

Next, there was the Tour Diary, firstly on their official site, then mirrored here, like practically half the interwebs last decade.

Then, there was MySpace. What? No, I dunno either… Apparently it’s a socialmcsomething. Whoever.

Not content with one social space, the Facebook took over from ‘Space’s reign, bringing even more socially-awkward and commentable musings.

Finally – well, clearly not finally, if history is anything to go by – there’s Tumblr. Having spent the last 15 minutes clicking through a near un-navigable hell-hole of a MySpace blog design, I can honestly asure you this really is the complete collection of all Davey’s MySpace and Facebook blogs to date, starting from just after the afformentioned Tour Diary, running through the entire MySpace blogs (starting 9th June 05 through 1st July 2011) and all Facebook post following through the current July 3rd 2012 one.

Frankly, it’s even better formatted than the previous blogs, with some entries I can’t find even on them. So, the heck to you, social media – Tumblr ftw! Maybe I can finally find that fabled Davey quote I’ve been looking for. Or just waste another week of my life reading it all again πŸ™‚ Only thing missing is those ever wonderful comments, but hey, what do you think this site if for, eh?

New Gig Media

Yes yes, lazy etc, bitches got houses and lives to sort these days you know… ok, maybe not the life bit. And hey, there’s always time for Crimea πŸ™‚

There’s was time back in 2006 when AAA Photography snapped the guys at Oxegen fest, at Punchestown Races in Ireland, 07/07/2006.

There was time a couple months ago (time flys…) for someone other than myself to take some vid of the band playing at Union Chapel. The current entire vid collection is here, or just the new ‘un:

And a coule people – Rodger Button and Michelle MendonΓ§a managed to catch Davey (and Tara) at the charity Fear of Sky gig last week – the latter even getting the below video of Lottery Winners (I know, again):

‘Sall for now, but lots (and lots, and lots) of background reading coming up…

‘Fear of Sky’ Book

Fear of SkyDavey’s last published book was Unamazing Disgraces in two-thousand-and-agesago. About time for a new one then πŸ˜‰ Here’s the write up:

Fear of Sky is an eBook by Davey, giving a detailed and unique insight into his life as a volunteer nurse at Nyumbani orphanage in Kenya in 2011. Photos, poems and related short stories are also included.

All proceeds will go towards helping Davey to bring harmonicas and other musical instruments to children at an orphanage in Soweto, South Africa where Davey is volunteering Summer 2012.

Your instant download includes a 60 page PDF eBook which can be loaded on to your Kindle, iPad, iPhone or eReader of choice, and an MP3 version of The Crimea track, Out of Africa.

Oh and, it’s now the only place to get the Out of Africa MP3 too, you cheap-os. So get paying and downloading, all for charity see πŸ™‚ . Get it all here:

Over the moon, under the influence…

By popular request (ok, some guy’s tattoo…): More poorly ratioed Youtube vids! Actually, it’s just Stoned, the track that finally gave this site a relatively topical domain name.

Originally heard as a demo track in a video on the old official Warners site (I believe recorded whilst they were in a Warner Bros office in the USA, but idk, total guess), this was recorded sometime mid 2005. As I said, the res is shit on Youtube, so grab the original video instead if you can be bothered.

The Crimea – Down on the

It was then recorded and released as a free download, as a “B-side” to the free Loop-a-Loop download(s). The other B-side was Can’t Forget You Girl, a track based around the melody originally in The Great Unknown (itself on the Tragedy Rocks album πŸ˜‰ ). Clearly a fountain of Crimea knowledge, me. Anyway, MP3s:

The Crimea – Stoned
The Crimea – Can’t Forget You Girl

While Davey’s lyrics had indelibly inked themselves on to many a mind, never quite have they done so much so to man’s own body:

Lyrics Tattoo

I’m proud to say I correctly figured the lyrics from even this small resolution, but for the uneducated, here’s the much larger version, original lyrics on the evidently back-in-fashion MySpace or just formatted by yours truely.

The original, and best Davey ink love though, still goes to D1939 and his arm-o-face-o-doom. Something like that. Watch out, Mr Lyric Man, lest Davey drag you in front of a thousand cameras too.

D1939 Tattoo

Nice to see Davey still sports his much more minimalistic option though πŸ˜‰ So, is that a real tattoo Davey? And are you really gonna let these guys outdo you? ?? πŸ™‚

Davey Tattoo

If ever there was a time…

…to save a kids life, or just improve it for a while, following the last post is probably fitting.

Fear of Sky Concert part 2.

That’s Davey Macmanus playing a charity gig at Camden Enterprise (you know where it is by now, surely) on 21st June 2012. Tickets here, or just send donations direct to Davey’s bank account (details in these FB comments so long as you’re friends with Davey). Just get that guy some harmonicas already!

Treasure Each Day

Waaayyy back in 2006 I mentioned a release by The Love Bus, released by Felicity Burdett, one of the many talented Gold Coast musicians I heard about through Julz who also happens to feature on lead guitar throughout the album.

It’s a great album, with tracks mostly based around Felicity’s two children Sky & Kayla, though at first I figured she was just going on about some pets or something until I found this out. I’ve never heard someone quite so in love with her kids & family as this – see tracks Daughters, The World, and, well, all of it. Without knowing any of them, the whole album makes you feel an intimate part of their early lives. Anyway, Felicity is also one of my favourite female vocalists ever and it’s an album I still listen to more than most.

Going With The FlowThe whole thing can be purchases below, and I’ve attached a couple tracks for the heck of it. – The entire album for purchase. Do it do it do it πŸ™‚ – Yeah, people had MySpace pages, once…

The Love Bus – Tears Like Waterfalls
The Love Bus – Life Is What You Make It
The Love Bus – Treasure

And that was that. Until earlier today, when a random facebook post and a quick google let to just about the saddest news I’ve ever heard. I’ll let Google break your hearts; I just hope Felicity’s doing ok, I’m sure everyone in Aus is looking after her. *heart* If nothing else, they had the most loving (and, hell, talented) mum ever. As Davey just randomly posted – totally unrelated, I’m sure – “Dear world, why are you so utterly + confusing + demonic + barbed”.

Crack Me Please

Just like an egg.

7Digital & Warner Bros, in their infinite wisdom, infested this alternate OoA track with DRM. And have since shutdown the servers that allow it to be verified, or any normal drm-stripper to do it’s work – that requires the original key, from the now non-existent server. I did it once, but before multiple formats, lost files, etc. So, basically, no track.

If you have a copy that plays, can get this one playing, or can otherwise circumvent the thing, get in touch. The Kernel demands it πŸ˜‰

EDIT: Well that didn’t take long. God bless paranoia-enduced over-the-top backup strategies – this comes via a dusty old DVD tucked away on the shelf, marked ARIA BACKUP 12/04/06 – “Aria” being my entire PC as of date, knew I’d have it somewhere πŸ˜‰ .

The Crimea – Out Of Africa.mp3

Excuse the mess.

Mucking about with layouts. Could well mess a few things up. Seems in 10 years screen sizes have expanded a little too much to be useful, so I’m setting a fixed width on the content. This is much harder due to WordPress having updated itself out of compatibility with the template, and me having forgotten how the hell I wrote the HTML back in 2003. Seems OK for now… maybe I’ll finally get round to fixing the non-blog pages too πŸ™‚ (they only need a single header line, but, meh…

Also, if any Crimea fans still exist, and any happen to be HTML / XHTML / PHP / CSS / etc coders, and have enough will and love for the band…. anyone else fancy being official inaudible website tech? You get to have fun with my undocumented code and improve things via WordPress and all manner of Web 1.0 apps?

Just a great photo…

Rod & Davey, nabbed from Davey’s facebook, dunno the photographer but it’s an amazingly artistic shot, straight out a Tarantino…

The Crimea’s Big Background Listening Post

Just what every Crimea fan needs – a big collection of additional related music, however loosely connected. Here’s some great bands that everyone here likes. Everyone being myself. So… basically bands I like. Yeah. Well. If you got anything someone else likes, comment it up and I’ll add them in. For now though, here’s what you should have been listening to over the past 10 years:

Murry The Hump
No Crimea / Crox fan should in their right mind be oblivious to this band. Formed around the same time in the same place (Aber Uni circa 1996), playing similar music and once touted by Blur as bigger than Coldplay (I say bigger, they just thought Coldplay were shit, and were all over “y Hump” as they say in the valleys.) Their debut Songs of Ignorance LP is also the traditional Crimea after-gig chill-out listening album. And when I say traditional, I mean, only I do it. Tradition enough.

Here’s an added bonus of Matt name-checking the crox in Y Cwps bar, before heading in to the topical New Deal (just after Crox were dropped from V2 I do believe).

No direct relation, other than lead singer Scott Andrews is just about the biggest Davey fan I know, besids myself. So much so Davey even features on their album, in Don’t Drive (Faster Than Your Angel Can Fly).

Llama Farmers
They toured with em, shared fans, and most everyone fancied Jenny. The others are still making music under various names, but here’s their best, which I of course want to tell everyone about…

El Spoonio
Well well. The Crox’s very own bitch boys, El Spoonio, were Pagey, Timmy, some other guys, I forget. Not their tracks though, they were great, unforgettable, “the best song(s) ever”. Something like that. I’m sure the lads, wherever they are, won’t mind the promotion of their never-to-be-produced-again EP, the Big Big Fun EP.

El Spoonio – Lubricous.mp3
El Spoonio – Medieval.mp3
El Spoonio – Dead Man.mp3
El Spoonio – Icecream.mp3

The Fish Brothers
Oft. seen sporting their embossed wears, Davey’s general distaste for other’s music in general tends to fall short at The Fish Brothers. I’m not so sure of them myself, but if Davey’s keen, why not.
Davey in Fish Brothers top.

Dusty Springfield
Well, it’s not quite just the Fish Bros. Davey’s other musical love appears to be the wall of sound of Dusty Springfield. A strange man, our Davey, and we love him for it.

A few of the old Crox board fans seemed to like these guys. Here’s one of the most recommended tracks:

Rachel Stamp
Speaking of which, hardly a day passed without these guys being mentioned. Never looked further in to it myself, but… better late than never?

The Hot Puppies
Another not-so-related band, other than also forming in Aberystwyth. Now off having babies and stuff (who isn’t), these are the only other band bar The Crimea I’ve probably ever bothered to go see live. So they must be good.

Project Winterhaven
Once upon a time, a young lady with amazing skills joined an amazing band and made amazing music. Post gig one day, she pulled a beautiful blue sleeved disc from a pouch, and in one fell swoop proved she’d been amazing long before appearing on these shores. If you though Julz was just good for random riffs, here’s an entire album to prove otherwise. Oh how we were once blessed…

Sarah Howells has one of the greatest voices ever. Matched only by some girl who was singing on the pavement outside my house a few days ago (no shit, really). Anyway, Sarah went on to provide vocals on a load of trance releases, but before then she created the Adam Walton recommended Orange Lights, one of my favourite ever tracks When We Danced (skip to 2nd tune in the album app below), and even had our Owen fill in on drums on their first release Subside EP (get that here while you can from some kind bloke who left a directory open πŸ™‚ ).

More Vids etc.

But to start with…

Y U No enter competition? Bleh. You all loosers. Answer was Jam. Jam jam jam! (and bonus cinnamon and raisin bagel). Next gig, who knows. Guess the right answer and you might win something!

Oh and here’s a bigger and better pic of the signed album. Davey = My Hero. Well, him and benton fraser, mr blobby and quincy m.e. . Davey’s possibly the only non-fictional one though, despite my continued belief mr blobby is actually real (clearly shown in this historical image with myself and my sister, see, total real).

Square Moon signed cover.

And yes, more video. 720p of it (whatever that is, CRT forever here). Bad Vibrations by… someone not as quick at uploading as myself. Credit yourself in the comments or whatever, oh mystery filmogropher.

Oh. Em. Chatroom! Gee.

Behold, the old chatroom, multiple spoonios inclued! Yes, this is so old (10th Dec 2000) the screenshot wasn’t even resized due to the minute monitor res of the time. Happy days.
