Andy Norton Biography
Andy while in Denzel.
The newest Crimea member, Andy Norton, joined after Julz Parker returned
to Australia, and played his first gig at Fortress Studios, London, as
part of the studios 10th birthday party.
Andrew Stephane Norton (his dad is a fan of jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli),
of Welsh and Mauritian parents, was born and raised in Pontypridd, South Wales.
In his teens, he was a talented athlete, and was at one time a member of Welsh Squash squad. He started playing the guitar at the age of 13, and in the space of a year was playing with Cardiff Rhythm and Blues bands. In 1996, at age 15, Andy joined 'The Minnesota Barking Ducks' to do the South Wales blues circuit. The line up included fantastic Welsh guitarist Glyn Knight, ('Snatch It Back' and 'Stone Free') who was an inspiration to Andy.
In the same year Andy entered a competition in 'Total Guitar' magazine, and finishing runner up out of thousands of entries, gained a scholarship to 'The Academy Of Contemporary Music', Guildford. Whilst studying at the college, Andy worked closely with the likes of Bruce Dickinson (ex Little Angels), Paul Geary (Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra), and also Paul Winterhart (Kula Shaker).
Leaving college at the end of his one year course, and just turning 17, Andy decided to move to London, where he found an original group in the shape of 'Denzel'.He stayed with them for a number of years writing and recording songs. Some of their recordings feature Skunk Anansie and Feeder drummer Mark Richardson. They gained a measure of success, which included a session for X-FM's Christian O'Connell and a headline performance before Sir Paul McCartney at The Garage. They were signed to indie label Mighty Atom, but a commercial breakthrough eluded them. Their official website is www.denzel.co.uk
and you can listen to some of their tracks on the BBC
To pay the rent, Andy also played with Elvis tribute band 'X Certificate'
, stacked shelves for Boots
The Chemist, And taught guitar in East London schools.
As far as I can tell, Andy plays on the following Tragedy Rocks
(2004 version) tracks:
The Miserabilist Tango
Howling At The Moon Won't Make It Better
Out Of Africa
And on virtually everything released after that.
